In May 2019, Roger Bennett, founder, president, and CEO, experienced a life-altering event: a transient ischemic attack (TIA), commonly known as a mini-stroke. The incident occurred during a CrossFit workout with his longtime friend, Todd, in the gym that Roger and his wife, Jessica, had built in their pole barn. As he transitioned from burpees to sit-ups, Roger suddenly felt dizzy and noticed blurred vision in his right eye. Ignoring the warning signs, he continued working out until his vision vanished completely, accompanied by a pounding headache. Instead of seeking immediate medical attention, he decided to rest. Fortunately, his vision gradually returned, but he sensed something was seriously wrong.

The following day, during a scheduled doctor’s visit for a fasted blood draw, Roger shared his experience with his physician and high school friend, Dr. Gregory Gould. Dr. Gould quickly recognized the seriousness of the situation, informing Roger that he had most likely suffered a stroke and urging him to go to the hospital without delay. Subsequent tests revealed that a hole in Roger’s heart, a Patent Foramen Ovale (PFO), had allowed a clot to pass through and cause the mini-stroke. Ultimately, Roger underwent surgery to close the hole, and his recovery was relatively swift.

This life-altering event prompted Roger to reevaluate his purpose and calling. Throughout his life, he had felt drawn to ministry. Facing uncertainty about his health and future, he turned to prayer, humbly surrendering with the words, “Your will be done.” In that moment, he recognized God’s calling on his heart.

Over the next year, Roger diligently researched how to start a nonprofit 501(c)(3). God’s guidance became evident as he aligned his educational and professional path, preparing him to effectively communicate and teach the Gospel. Simultaneously, he developed a profound love for nature, spending as much time outdoors as possible.

With the support of our incredible board of directors, including Curt Rienas and Pastor Steve Barkey – two men from our morning Bible study who prayed with me during my hospital stay – Faith Excursions For Everyone was granted 501(c)(3) nonprofit status by the IRS in February 2020. We established a five-year plan to grow the organization from a part-time charity, impacting tens of children in the first year, to a full-time charity reaching hundreds by year five. This plan aligned perfectly with Roger’s goal of transitioning from an elementary school principal to dedicating his life to Faith Excursions, with the aim of retiring from public education by year five.

Unfortunately, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic just a month later temporarily derailed our plans. However, this setback only strengthened our commitment. Despite the obstacles, our determination to fulfill God’s calling and impact lives – especially youth – through faith-based outdoor excursions remains steadfast.
